In many of her novels, it’s the villain who stands out from the rest of the cast. Here is a list of some of my personal picks for the best of her worst. 1. Mr. Victor Vane Book: Idalia (1867) Character Type: Opportunist/Conspirator Quote: “It is only—excuse me—madmen who use force; is it not their own necks that pay the penalty?” 3. Prince Tyras (Gavroche) Book: Helianthus (1908) Character Type: Aristocrat/Dandy Quote: “I enjoy myself. Lucy Davis (Constance Trefusis) Book: Held in Bondage (1861) Character Type: Opportunist/Femme Galante Quote: “Then he will want to be free of me; then, indeed, he shall realize the force of the fetters by which I hold him.” 5. Aurelio Vestuccio Book: The Tower of Taddeo (1892) Character Type: Opportunist/Broker Quote: “But, of course, if you wish to buy it yourself your prior claim would never be disputed by me.” 6. Prince Sartorian Book: Folle-Farine (1871) Character Type: Aristocrat/Seducer Quote: “One cannot wear a velvet glove to tame a lioness.” 7. Dr. Damer Book: Toxin (1895) Character Type: Doctor/Betrayer Quote: “The dead are of little use to us; their nervous system is still, like a stopped clock.” 8. Laura Pearl (Avice Dare) Book: Puck (1870)
Character Type: Opportunist/Femme Galante Quote: “I hate readin’…”
